The 10 Best (and Worst) Treatments For Premature Ejaculation

There’s a surprisingly large number of premature ejaculation treatments available to men wanting to last longer in bed ranging from the highly effective to complete scams which makes deciding which is the best for you quite a dilemma.

Treatments range from prescription medicine to numbing sprays or counseling to premature ejaculation training course and they will all range in their application, effectiveness and potential side effects. This makes it pretty tough for guys with premature ejaculation when they first decide they want to combat it.

While there is only one way to stop premature ejaculation for good, there’s no harm in understanding the other treatments floating about. If nothing else, it will at least prevent you from getting scammed by over-hyped claims.

Premature Ejaculation Treatments:

Next, we’ll take a look at the large range of treatments available. This will include the good, the bad and the ugly as all premature ejaculation treatments are not created equally.

Many of the following methods on the list are not recommended. They are on the list in order for it to be as complete as possible.

Treating Premature Ejaculation With Medications

A known side effect of some medication is a decrease in sexual arousal and delayed ejaculation. While none of these medications are specifically approved by the Food and drug administration (US) and in most other countries, some of these medications may be prescribed by a doctor in severe cases. These medications are usually antidepressants, analgesics, and phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors.

Sometimes combinations of medications are prescribed on either a daily basis (ongoing) or on-demand.

Prescription Medications For Premature Ejaculation

Antidepressants (SSRI’s)

SSRIs Treatment For Premature Ejaculation

A side effect of some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is delayed orgasm and they are sometimes prescribed to men with PE. These include paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft) or fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem).  The tricyclic antidepressant clomipramine (Anafranil) is sometimes prescribed if the above medications are unsuccessful

Possible side effects of antidepressants are:

  • Decreased libido
  • Nausea,
  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness

Analgesics

When SSRIs are unsuccessful a pain treatment medication called Tramadol (Ultram) is sometimes prescribed.

Unwanted side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness.

Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (Viagra and Cialis)

Some medications used to treat erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil (Viagra, Revatio), tadalafil (Cialis, Adcirca) or vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn), also may help premature ejaculation. Unwanted side effects may include headaches, facial flushing, temporary visual changes and nasal congestion.

Delay Sprays and Creams For Premature Ejaculation

Premature Ejaculation Spray

This method has been around for millennia in one form or another. The idea is that premature ejaculation is caused by an overly sensitive penis and that numbing this sensation will increase the duration of sex. I explain why this is not the case in my in-depth look at delay sprays for premature ejaculation.

There is a range of these sprays or creams available either online or from the chemist. Almost all of these products contain lidocaine (sometimes known as xylocaine or lignocaine) as an active ingredient or local anesthetic.

The more expensive aerosol-based sprays contain a combination of lidocaine and prilocaine which it is claimed enhances absorption. While some studies have shown some benefits of this method there are still a large number of drawbacks to the form of premature ejaculation treatment.

Delay Spays combined with a premature ejaculation training program?

Note that I never recommend these sprays for my clients. They are a superficial fix and don’t go to the real causes of premature ejaculation. They also prevent men from developing much more effective ejaculatory control skills.

Side Effects and Drawbacks Of Premature Ejaculation Sprays and Creams

There are a number of adverse side effects of this form of treatment.

  • Reduced pleasure during sex
  • Not permanent (Needs to be applied every time prior to intercourse
  • Expensive over the long run
  • High risk of also numbing your partner
  • Guaranteed mood killer
  • Can make you flaccid (unable to maintain an erection)
  • Can make your premature ejaculation worse when use is discontinued
  • Rash and Itchiness

Premature ejaculation books and guides

Recently a number of premature ejaculation ebooks have been promoted heavily online towards men looking to last longer in bed. Most of these books outline some traditional methods and exercises such as edging, the stop and start technique, the squeeze method, and Kegels.

Unfortunately, the most heavily marketed premature ejaculation ebooks have been written by the same marketers who promote “penis enlargement” ebooks, with much of the same content being re-hashed and sold to men with premature ejaculation.

These types of ebooks are easy to spot as they are all sold on the “click bank” affiliate marketing network and contain an avalanche of hyped claims and fake testimonies on their site. These books are often recommended by their affiliate sites who make a hefty commission if you buy them after clicking on their links.

Premature Ejaculation Pills (herbal-based)

Also marketed heavily online are so-called premature ejaculation pills (sometimes called Last longer pills) which claim to contain a mix of herbs and active ingredient that will help men prolong sex.

As nice as it would be if the claims made on these websites were true, there is no evidence that any of these pills will help men last longer.

Contents Of Herbal Premature Ejaculation Pills

Most pills contain a combination of the following ingredient

  • Ginseng
  • L-Arginine
  • Pyridoxine
  • Folic Acid
  • Chrysin
  • Griffonia simplicifolia
  • Piper nigrum extract

They also almost always contain a majority of filler type ingredients such as:

  • Corn Starch
  • Gelatin
  • Maltodextrin
  • Magnesium Stearate
  • Silicone
  • Dioxide
  • Rice Flour
  • Glucose

While most of these premature ejaculation pills will be perfectly safe to take there is no evidence that they have any effect on the duration of intercourse for men.

Most sellers of these pills specify that they should be taken on an ongoing basis which will become very expensive for very little benefit.

Expert Coaching

Although still relatively rare. There’s a small number of expert stamina coaches who give one on one guidance on helping men last longer in bed. If you are able to find a good coach this is, in my opinion, the most effective way to guild ejaculatory control.

You will need at least 6 sessions and your coach should give you some training exercises to complete each week. If you struggle with something he or she should be able to offer advice on how to correct your technique and make changes to personalize your training program.

A good coach should also be able to identify any mental or psychological factors that may be contributing to your premature ejaculation and give you strategies to eliminate them.

Note: I have spent the last 5 years coaching men how to last longer in bed. Due to high demand, I only take on new clients by personal referral. The success I have seen with the methods I teach is the main reason I have put together the Ejaculation Freedom premature ejaculation training course which you can get hold of online.

See A Sex Therapist

If you can’t find a specialist premature ejaculation coach your next best form of one on one advice is to see a sex therapist.

With no standards for training required the quality of sex counselors does vary greatly. Some are very spiritual while others may hold doctorates in psychology but if you can find a good one its possible to experience positive results.

Most will encourage you to attend counseling sessions with your partner and they can also help improve other areas of your sexual relationship.

While I’d definitely recommend checking out my Ejaculation Freedom Online Course first, if you decide that you’d like to visit sex therapist (and reside in the US) check out the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists at www.aasect.org or the Society for Sex Therapy and Research at www.sstarnet.org.

While relatively expensive, this is a safer and even more effective form of treatment and should always be considered before taking any medication.

Psychotherapy

psychotherapy-for-PE

This form of treatment is based around the idea that premature ejaculation is primarily psychological or “all in your head”. It generally involves sessions “on the couch” with a psychotherapist or psychologist.

Premature Ejaculation Is Almost Never Only Psychological

Many experts still try to break premature ejaculation up into Psychological PE and Physical PE. While this notion was popular in the past I don’t subscribe to it. Through working with my clients I have seen first hand how it is impossible to make this separation.  While it’s no doubt important to get the mental side of things sorted out you should never ignore steps to improve your physical ejaculatory skills.

Self Help

While you won’t see this listed as a premature ejaculation treatment or remedy it is by far the most common way that men attempt to deal with premature ejaculation. Most men do this by scouring the internet for scraps of advice from forums or articles.

At first, most men are far too embarrassed by their premature ejaculation to talk to someone about it and instead try to fix the problem on their own. While there is occasionally some reasonable advice online, 95% of it is completely off the mark.

Here are a few examples of self-help advice to avoid

  • Distract yourself by counting or thinking about (insert most disgusting or boring thought here) during sex
  • Masturbate before sex
  • Do lots of Kegels training

While most of this advice won’t do you any harm (except for excessive Kegels exercises which can make your PE worse), it is basically a waste of time and it prevents you from learning the real skills needed for ejaculatory control.

Many of my clients and guys who complete the Ejaculation Freedom course online tell me about all the goofy things they have tried because they read it online. They can laugh about it now, but regret that this “free” advice wasted their time and postponed the chance to experience real sex with full ejaculatory control.

Hypnotherapy for Premature Ejaculation

hypnotherapy for premature ejaculation

It seems that whatever problem you have, be it smoking, stress or your inability to fly there is hypnotherapist ready to “fix you up”, and premature ejaculation is no exception. While the idea of popping your headphones on, dozing off and then waking up with all your premature ejaculation struggles gone is no doubt appealing,  it is equally far fetched.

When Should I See A Doctor?

The large majority of the time premature is not related to any medical conditions. In some cases of late-onset premature ejaculation, there is a separate cause that should be diagnosed and treated medically.

If you experience any of the following you should visit your local doctor

  • Trouble maintaining an erection
  • Prostate pain
  • Pain when urinating

If none of these symptoms are present (which will be most men) its likely that your premature ejaculation has is not caused by a medical issue.

Comparison criteria

Effectiveness

For most men, this will be the most important thing to consider.  At the end of the day, all you want is for you and your partner to be able to enjoy sex.

Permanent Results?

Does the treatment method require ongoing use? Most treatment methods fall into this criteria, for example, pills (both medical and herbal) and desensitizing sprays and creams.

Can be completed on your own

This is often overlooked but in reality, is an important aspect. I know first hand from my face to face clients that many of them had put off seeking treatment (most for a number of years) through the embarrassment and shame they felt and all of them regretted not seeking treatment earlier.

If a treatment can be completed anomalously that’s often a huge factor for many guys

note: This is the main reason I made the Ejaculation Freedom course available online. So men can get the premium training I was giving my face to face clients without having to take the step of talking to someone face to face.

Cost

There’s a huge discrepancy in the cost of treatment methods ranging from the free such as the stop and start method or the advice (much of it dubious) given out on online articles or forums to the hyper-expensive treatments sold by some “medical” practices targeting men with PE.

Easy To Use?

Some treatments are remarkably easy. For example, there’s not much effort required in gulping down a herbal premature ejaculation pill you have ordered online. On the other hand, completing a training course will require your focused effort over a few weeks.

Counseling sessions will also involve a greater deal of mental effort.

Is it Discrete?

While there’s no reason to be embarrassed about experiencing premature ejaculation. It’s experienced by 30-50 percent of men after all. Most guys will want a treatment that is discrete.
